Stride Cornwall

Stride Cornwall is a new, not-for-profit, volunteer run community group made up of young people and their families from across Cornwall. The main participants in this series are young people aged 11-18, most of whom, for a variety of reasons, are not currently engaging with schools or colleges. Stride Cornwall aims to provide a safe, inclusive space with high-quality experiences which build their self-esteem, resilience and social networks. Our activities are designed with young people at the heart whilst considering the geographical restrictions of living in a county which is one of the most deprived in Europe and where access to opportunities is limited by poverty, insufficient infrastructure and poor transport links. Stride's activities so far have largely been focused on hiking, camping and navigation in preparation for TenTors, and conservation work linked to the John Muir Award scheme. We have a growing number of young people and families wanting to engage with us in the great outdoors but who do not yet feel capable of walking long distances. The summer multi-activity programme is designed to engage with those young people alongside existing members of Stride in activities which are new to them all, allowing access to outdoor sport on a level playing field.
