Gullah Museum
The Gullah Museum in historic downtown Georgetown, SC, offers presentations on Gullah Geechee history, centered around our signature Story Quilts. The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of the West and Central Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of coastal southeast United States. The nature of their captivity on isolated island and coastal plantations created a unique culture and language that allowed them to preserve aspects of their West and Central African heritage, which is clearly visible in the language, foodways, spiritual expression, naming practices, storytelling, music, dance, of the Gullah Geechee. The Gullah Museum seeks to educate visitors about how the Gullah Geechee people shaped—and continue to influence—American culture.
