*Flipped Learning: A perspective from the University of Texas @ Austin. The term flipped classroom has been used ubiquitously in recent pedagogical literature. Philosophies and methodologies have varied widely and the literature has reported a mixed rate of success. This workshop will give an overview from three different instructors of how flipped learning has been used at UT Austin, report some ideas that faculty have been discussing, and promote discussions about how flipped learning can be used to increase student learning.

Anne Braseby is an Educational Consultant in the Faculty Innovation Center at UT Austin. She works with faculty at UT to help them innovate their courses to include more active learning, collaborative learning, and experiential learning. She has published articles about the flipped classroom and believes that students are more motivated and perform at a higher level if they are active participants in their learning.

Jennifer (Jen) Moon is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Molecular Biosciences and the Assistant Dean for Non Tenure Track Faculty in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a highly awarded teacher who dedicates much of her time to professional growth in teaching. Although teaching in the College of Natural Sciences is her first passion, she is also interested in faculty learning communities and facilitates a professional development workshop series that incorporates arts-based pedagogy for science and engineering faculty.

Gautami Shah is an instructor in the Department of Asian Studies. She teaches Hindi and courses about the Hindi culture including courses on Bollywood films. She is interested in the innovative use of technology in language teaching.

**Flipped Learning: Creating Flexible Classrooms (Pearson)

As language classrooms increasingly feature mixed ability students, reasons for flipped learning increase, starting with the opportunity for students to read and write outside of class at their own pace. In flipped learning, students spend more time learning during their own time, and in-class time is used for learner-centered active learning, with teachers and classmates providing feedback and support. Teachers sometimes resist flipped learning over concerns of losing control and a lack of student responsibility. This presentation explains how teachers and students can begin with small steps to integrate flipped learning efficiently and effectively.

Dr. Ken Beatty, Anaheim University TESOL Professor, has worked in secondary schools and universities in Asia, the Middle East, and North and South America, presenting on language teaching and computer-assisted language learning from the primary through university levels. Author of 130+ textbooks, he has given 300+ teacher-training sessions and 100+ conference presentations in 35 countries. His most recent books are Learning English for Academic Purposes for Pearson Canada and as Series Consultant for StartUp for Pearson USA.
