The Soothing Season
Hello and welcome,
My name is Sarah I'm an art therapist, printmaker, and creator of nature visualisations. My main focus in my work and my life is finding soothing and connection in life, and for me art making, visualisations and being around nature have been the key elements in doing this.
Over 20 years ago, when I was the manager of a residential home for adults with learning disabilities, I developed a debilitating illness that lead to me having to give work and focus on wellbeing. This journey lead to me to reconnected with art-making which was a vital conduit to me expressing and understanding how I was feeling. I also began my journey of finding self-soothing in my life. I explored this for many years and in a variety of different settings.
I found that art-making and soothing activities made a huge difference to my emotional and physical health. So when my health had improved I decided to train as an art therapist, graduating my MA in 2011, and initially working with complex trauma in schools.
Before my illness I didn't have a passion for the outdoors or nature, but when I became housebound this all changed. It started with gardening programmes, then growing herbs inside to eventually understanding how connected I felt being a part of the natural world and the changing seasons.
In 2015 we moved to live in the North York Moors and this was the final step to bringing all my learning together. My passion for nature, soothing activities, art making and finding ways to feel connected led me to develop The Soothing Season.
I now offer regular workshops where relaxation techniques, visualisations, art making and group sharing are used to connect to the wisdom of nature.
I also run longer workshops on self-care, connecting to difficult emotions, using art to soothe and relax, using art as a reflective tool and many more.
