About this event

THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF MOUNT ZION IN JERUSALEM - PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE - Lecture by Shimon Gibson, Professor of Practice in History & Archaeology (University of North Carolina at Charlotte)

Archaeological excavations have been conducted on Mount Zion in Jerusalem since the nineteenth century. Following an Introduction dealing with the history of early explorations of the South-Western Hill by Wilson, Warren, Schick, Merrill, Renard, Vincent and others, the lecturer will provide an overview of modern archaeological work conducted in the area of the Western Hill from Kenyon/Tushingham in the 1960s and to the present day excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Gibson’s involvement with work in this part of the city began in the 1970s as a staff member on Magen Broshi’s excavations. A summary of the highlights of Broshi’s excavation results will be presented, with new insights based on modern research. A summary of the achievements of the current excavations on Mount Zion conducted by the lecturer on behalf of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will also be presented, as well as a preview of the key questions which are to be addressed in the forthcoming Summer of 2023 season of digging.
