LITERATURE AND MENTAL HEALTH: NARRATIVE PRACTICES IN ARTICULATING RESPONSES TO TEXT

How reader-centred is your Literature class? To what extent do you manage to focus on readers as co-writers and, therefore, as meaning-makers? What techniques can we put in practice to achieve a real shift away from the authority of author/text/teacher to promote and sustain reader empowerment? What might motivate this shift from teaching to inspiring?
This session draws from the foundations of Narrative Therapy to focus on concepts such as decentring and re-authoring to support the practice of shared reading as a transformative meaning-making experience. An experiential shared reading session, from which to observe a shift from teacher-led to reader-centred practice will follow. Practical advice will be shared on how to formulate decentred questions and how to build from readers responses to support in-depth interpretation and meaning-making.
